NF Single Use Breathalyzers
Single Use, NF-Certified French Breathalyzer Kits
The cheapest solution to ensure you comply with the new French Breathalyzer law is to carry an NF-Approved single use breathalyzer.
The Decree states that the breathalyzers MUST be listed in the “Official Journal of the French Republic” so you should only purchase NF-Approved Breathalyzer Kits if you want to be certain they will be accepted by the French Gendarme.
Don’t Be Fooled by Fakes: Any device that is NF Approved will have this NF logo on the packaging and the supplier should be able to provide you with an NF Certificate – ours can be seen here.
“Tested to NF Standards” and “Approved for use in France” is like saying your car was “tested” for an MOT. It doesn’t mean it passed! If someone is selling you an NF kit, ask to see their certificate. If they can’t produce one, DON’T BUY IT!

Frequently Asked Questions!
Will the Gendarme test me with my kit?
The Gendarme will NOT ask you to do a breath test for them using your own kit – they will use their own £2,500 Digital Breathalyser if they suspect you’ve been drinking.
How many do I need?
You only need to carry one – however if you decide to use it, you will need another unused kit to show a Gendarme if you’re stopped, which is why most people recommend a minimum of two. But if you DO test yourself and find you’re over, you’ll need a second to check you ARE OK before you do drive… and a third to show the Gendarme. We deliberately don’t sell them as pre-packed “twin packs”, so that the choice is yours – buy just one in order to simply comply with the law, or buy 2, 3 or more – and have a couple spare.
Simple to Use, Easy to Blow
Unlike other kits where the user has to blow through the tube (which can be difficult for some users, especially the elderly) with the Contralco kit the user blows into the bag without the tube first; the ends of the tube are then squeezed together (nothing to break off, throw away etc) and the air is then squeezed by hand back through the tube.
To read the result, just check the crystals….
- If the crystals are ALL Yellow, the result is zero – you are Clear to Go!
- If the crystals are Green BELOW the line, according to the tube, you are under the maximum limit. But you DO have alcohol in your blood and your judgement and reaction times will almost certainly be affected – you should consider waiting a while and retesting.
- If the crystals are Green BEYOND the line – your are definitely over the limit. DO NOT DRIVE!
